What Is Client-Based Tracking (Cookie / Pixel Tracking) in Affiliate Marketing?

Client-based tracking, also known as cookie tracking or pixel tracking, is one of the most common methods used in affiliate marketing to record conversions.

It works by storing small pieces of data (cookies) on a visitor’s browser whenever they click on an affiliate link. These cookies contain details such as:

  • Affiliate ID

  • Transaction ID

  • Transaction amount

  • Date and time of the click or purchase

  • Other tracking information

How Does Client-Based Tracking Work?

  1. User clicks on an affiliate link
The click redirects the user to a specific offer URL, and a cookie is placed in their browser.

  2. User completes a purchase
When the user reaches the advertiser’s confirmation (thank you) page after purchase, a pixel (IFRAME, JavaScript, or image pixel) is triggered.

  3. Cookie data is sent back
The pixel fires and sends the cookie data (Affiliate ID, Transaction details, etc.) to Involve Asia’s tracking platform.

  4. Conversion is recorded
The conversion is captured in the publisher’s dashboard and reflected in real-time (or depending on the offer’s validation process).

Why Client-Based Tracking Matters

  • Simple & widely used – Easy to implement and supported by most advertisers.

  • Enables attribution – Ensures conversions are properly linked to the correct publisher.

  • Provides insights – Tracks not only sales but also browsing behavior, time, and transaction details.

While client-based tracking is common, it may be less reliable if users block cookies, clear them, or switch devices. In such cases, server-to-server (S2S) tracking or postback URLs offer more accuracy.
